tralac presented a training course for the Judges of the COMESA Court of Justice (from the Appellate and First Instance Divisions) in Cape Town, South Africa during the week 11-15 July 2016.

The course considered the COMESA Treaty and specifically the provisions on the Court of Justice. The role and function of the COMESA Court, jurisdictional issues and the standing of parties were discussed. The provisions of COMESA law in terms of substantive rights and procedural aspects were also on the agenda. The merging picture with respect to human rights and the Law of Regional Integration enjoyed focus too.

Participants also reviewed the development of African Jurisprudence on Regional Integration; cases from the East Africa Court of Justice and the SADC Tribunal were among those considered. The development of COMESA precedents featured in the discussions too.

This was the second such training programme delivered specifically for the COMESA Judges. It was followed up with a third and final training programme in September 2016.
