This Trade Brief documents the trading relationship between the members of, the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) – primarily for the period 2006 to 2015 – but due to data limitations this date range will vary depending on the case under analysis. The analysis uses UNCOMTRADE data sourced from the International Trade Centre (ITC) Trade Map, and is expressed in United States (US) Dollars. The unit of analysis is in thousands of US dollars, unless otherwise stated.

This synopsis should be read in conjunction with the spreadsheet available to download below, and the two documents together contain the following data:

Summary data and figures

  • Graphical illustrations of SACU intra-trade over the last decade, for the top six traded products. A second graph is provided based on the top products traded at the start of the period, since the shifts over the decade are substantial.

  • An input-output matrix showing all the bilateral trade flows and a relational trade flow figure based on the matrix data.

  • Data and figures describing dependence and asymmetry in the intra-SACU trading relationships.

  • The top 20 traded product lines at the HS4 level in data and figures.

  • SACU trade over the last 10 years by country total exports and imports, in data and figures.

  • Bilateral 5 year growth changes for each intra-SACU trade flow and in comparison with the trade to the rest of the world (ROW) – in data and figures.

  • Re-exports as a percentage of total exports for countries for which data is available, in data and figures.
