This Trade Brief documents the trading relationship between South Africa (SA) and the three members of the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA), for the period 2006 to 2015. The analysis uses UNCOMTRADE data sourced from the International Trade Centre (ITC) Trade Map, and is expressed in United States (US) Dollars.

This synopsis should be read in conjunction with the spreadsheet below, and the two documents together contain the following data:

  • Graphical illustrations of South Africa’s trade with NAFTA over the last decade, for the top six export and import products.

  • A new Trade Indicators (‘TI’) section by summary and trading partner, showing a range of indicators of the trade profile including trade growth, shares in overall imports and exports overall volumes, applied ad valorem tariffs, indicators of proportional importance of both trade directions by trading partner

  • Tabular and graphical depiction of bilateral market access for the top ten products traded in both directions between the SA and the nations of the NAFTA.

  • South Africa’s trade balance with NAFTA, by country;

  • Total SA imports from and exports to all NAFTA countries, by country;

  • SA imports and exports products to NAFTA, at the HS4 level;

  • SA trade balance with NAFTA, by product

  • The top 20 South African exports to, and top 20 South African imports from NAFTA at the HS4 level, by country for the individual NAFTA countries;

  • A written overview (synopsis) of the trading relationship and an assessment of the relationship going forward.

  • An appendix containing time trends for applied tariffs for each NAFTA country for the aggregate as well as minerals and machinery product lines.
