Kenya: intra-African trade and tariff profile 2022
For 2022, the value of Kenya’s intra-African merchandise trade totalled US$5.3 billion, accounting for 19% of Kenya’s total merchandise trade. Kenya’s intra-African merchandise trade increased by 10% between 2021 and 2022. Uganda, Tanzania, Egypt and South Africa are Kenya’s main trading partners in Africa, accounting for 62% of Kenya’s intra-African merchandise trade.
In 2022, Kenya’s intra-African exports amounted to about US$3 billion, i.e. 41% of Kenya’s total exports. Between 2021 and 2022, Kenya’s intra-African exports increased by 8%. Kenya’s main intra-African exports include tea, palm oil, flat-rolled iron or non-alloy steel products, medicaments and cement. Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda are the main destination markets for Kenya’s intra-African exports. In 2022, these countries imported 54% of Kenya’s intra-African exports. Kenya’s main destination markets are EAC and COMESA members, except for South Africa.
The value of Kenya’s intra-African imports in 2022 were valued at US$2.3 billion. The imports accounted for only 11% of Kenya’s total imports. Kenya’s intra-African imports surged by 11% between 2021 and 2022. Maize, coal, sugar cane or beet, fertilisers and semi-finished iron or non-alloy steel products are Kenya’s main intra-African imports. The bulk (74%) of Kenya’s intra-African imports are sourced from South Africa, Tanzania, Egypt and Uganda.
