Malawi: 2019 intra-Africa trade and tariff profile
For 2019, Malawi’s intra-Africa exports and imports amounted to US$331 million and US$801 million respectively, while intra-Africa exports increased by 4% between 2018 and 2019 intra-Africa imports declined by 1%. Intra-Africa exports account for 36% of Malawi’s world exports, while 27% of world imports are sourced from the rest of the African continent. 61% of intra-Africa imports are sourced from South Africa, while Kenya and Egypt are the main destination markets. Almost all of Malawi’s intra-Africa trade is with countries that are also members of COMESA and SADC. 85% of exports to African countries outside COMESA and SADC are unmanufactured tobacco to Morocco (duty-free) and Algeria (15% duty) while 88% of these imports are duty-free imports Diammonium hydrogen orthophosphate (input into fertilisers).
