Burundi: 2019 intra-Africa trade and tariff profile
27% of Burundi’s total trade for 2019 was intra-Africa trade, mainly with fellow EAC and COMESA members Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. All most all the main products Burundi exports to other African countries are products of which Burundi’s world exports are exports to the rest of the Africa continent, including wheat flour, cigarettes, beer, trailers, iron bars and rods and soring machinery. Between 2018 and 2019 Burundi’s intra-Africa imports increased by 22%, mainly due to an increase in imports of cement, flat-rolled iron products, medicines and fertilisers. 2% of intra-Africa exports and 15% of intra-Africa imports were to and from African countries not members of the EAC and/or COMESA, mainly South Africa. 25% of imports from outside EAC and/or COMESA are refined sugar which is levied high specific duties (100% or US$460/MT whichever is higher).
