Mozambique: intra-Africa trade and tariff profile 2022
For 2022, the value of Mozambique’s intra-African merchandise trade was about US$4 billion, accounting for only 18% of the country’s global merchandise trade. Mozambique’s intra-African merchandise trade increased by 7% between 2021 and 2022. South Africa is Mozambique’s main African trading partner, accounting for 76% of Mozambique’s intra-African trade. Other main African trading partners include Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Eswatini and Zambia.
In 2022, Mozambique’s intra-African exports were value at approximately US$1.5 billion, i.e. only 19% of Mozambique’s global exports. Between 2021 and 2022, Mozambique’s intra-African exports rose by 18%. Mozambique’s main intra-African exports include electrical energy and natural gas, accounting for 48% of Mozambique’s intra-African exports. South Africa and Zimbabwe are the main destination markets for Mozambique’s intra-African exports, importing 63% and 13% of Mozambique’s intra-African exports, respectively.
The value of Mozambique’s intra-African imports in 2022 was US$2.6 billion, accounting for only 18% of Mozambique’s global imports. Between 2021 and 2022, Mozambique’s intra-African imports increased by only 1%. Electrical energy, crude palm oil, goods vehicles and frozen mackerel are Mozambique’s main intra-African imports. 84% of Mozambique’s intra-African imports are sourced from South Africa.
