Training Course for the Judges from the COMESA Court of Justice, 8-12 October 2018

tralac presented a 5-day training course for the Judges of the COMESA Court of Justice (from the Appellate and First Instance Divisions) in Cape Town, South Africa during the week 8-12 October 2018.

The course got underway on Monday morning with attendance at a lecture by Mr Alan Wolff, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), on Africa’s stake in the multilateral trading system at the University of the Western Cape.

Mr. Wolff highlighted the importance of trade as an engine of economic growth and the benefits of WTO membership to the African continent. He also underlined the need for governments to create an enabling domestic environment in order for Africa to thrive in an increasingly open world economy. The full text of his remarks is available here.

On Tuesday, Mr. Wolff addressed the course delegates on the importance of the multilateral trading system for Africa. Professor Gerhard Erasmus, tralac Associate, discussed global trade governance developments.

This specialised training programme follows on from the successful hosting of a series of similar courses for the COMESA Judges in 2016. Read more in the related news article: COMESA Judges trained on regional integration issues.
