Training Programme – Principles and Use of Data in Trade Negotiations: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 13-16 August 2013

tralac presented a short course on Principles of and Use of Data in Trade Negotiations in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 13th to 16th August, 2013, at the request of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIT) of Tanzania. The programme was funded by DANIDA.

The programme covered the following issues:

  • General principles of trade negotiations

  • The four pillars of trade policy

  • The value of trade liberalisation

  • Details of trade data including problems of access and reconciliation

  • Computer modelling in international trade

  • Use and limitations of computer models in assessing trade policy

  • Non-tariff barriers

  • Rules of origin

The programme was offered in order to further enhance the capacity of officials as Tanzania approaches the Tripartite Free Trade Area (T-FTA) negotiations.

Participants came from the following Government Ministries, trade-related agencies and private sector organisations:

Ministry of Industry and Trade; Ministry of Trade, Industry and Marketing – Zanzibar; Ministry of East African Cooperation; the President's Office (Planning Commission); Tanzania Revenue Authority; Tanzanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture; and the National Bureau of Statistics.
