The United Nations is in the process of defining a post-2015 development agenda. This agenda will be launched at a Summit in New York in September 2015, currently being elaborated through informal consultations of the UN General Assembly. The President of the General Assembly appointed two Co-facilitators to lead those informal consultations.

The process of arriving at the post-2015 development agenda is Member State-led with broad participation from Major Groups and other civil society stakeholders.

There have been numerous inputs to the agenda, notably a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by an open working group of the General Assembly, the report of an intergovernmental committee of experts on sustainable development financing, GA dialogues on technology facilitation and many others.

The General Assembly called upon the Secretary-General to synthesize the full range of inputs and to present a synthesis report before the end of 2014 as a contribution to the intergovernmental negotiations in the lead up to the Summit.

The United Nations has played a facilitating role in the global conversation on the post 2015 development agenda and supported broad consultations. It also has the responsibility of supporting Member States by providing evidence-based inputs, analytical thinking and field experience.

Intergovernmental negotiations on the outcome document: 20-31 July 2015

Side Events organized by Member States, major groups and other stakeholders, UN system and other intergovernmental organizations were scheduled to be held in the margins of the intergovernmental negotiations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda in New York on 20-24 July and 27-31 July 2015. This two-week span of discussions will be the seventh and eighth in the series of negotiations leading to the anticipated adoption of the post-2015 development agenda.

A revised draft of the outcome document for the UN Summit to adopt the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Global Action, was submitted by the co-facilitators on 26 July 2015. This document, envisaged as the draft for adoption by Heads of State and Government, takes account of the very wide range of views expressed on the draft outcome document circulated on 8 July.

A draft text for adoption was published on 30 July 2015. This was subsequently replaced by the finalised text for adoption, published on 1 August 2015.
