Six flagship publications on peace, security, development and governance in Africa have been launched at the UN General Assembly in New York.

The publications, which are products of joints efforts between the NEPAD Agency and other development and policy organisations address key priorities for the continent that are contained in the African Unions fifty year development framework, Agenda 2063. The conclusions and findings in the Six Reports provide essential data which will enable policy makers and practioners to set up reliable targets and benchmarks, adopt cost-effective and efficient strategies and measures progress accurately.

NEPAD’s publication Agriculture in Africa, structured in four chapters provides a diagnosis of opportunities and challenges that Africa is facing. The Report was produced to mark the tenth anniversary of the Comprehensive Africa’s Agriculture programme CAADP. The Programme has in the last decade promoted and allowed policymakers to engage with an array of stakeholders such as farmers and producers to optimise growth, triggering wider impact stemming from sound agricultural policies.

In presenting the Reports, NEPAD CEO Dr Ibrahim Mayaki said: “One of the story lines which emerge from this Report shows that while agriculture in Africa has created more employment than in any other region of the world in the past decade, it should continue doing so but at the same time generate more programmes to create wealth and reduce gaps between rural and urban areas.”

The Africa Innovation Outlook II presents results of research and development innovation indicators used to benchmark countries and enable them to track progress. The Report highlights structural issues that constrain economic growth and human development and the role of science, technology and innovation, in resolving some of these issues. The publication recommends among others, the training of more officials and creates a mass of experts to improve the quality of data.

Mr Maged Abdelaziz, Head Office of the UN Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), said that the collaboration in producing the knowledge publications was very essential for Africa. Two Reports produced by OSAA – The role of Microfinance in Africa’s Development and The role of New and Emerging partners in Infrastructure development in Africa – focus on two sectors of critical importance to Africa’s development.

The Reports identify challenges and opportunities for microfinance and infrastructure development in Africa and highlight the important role they can play in sustaining the remarkable economic growth achieved by Africa counties in the last ten years.

The other publications launched are Mobilising Domestic Financial Resources (download the full report), a comprehensive study by the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the NEPAD Agency, and Commendable Practices from Peer Reviews of Reports of Zambia, Tanzania and Sierra Leone, a policy brief produced by the Africa Peer review mechanism (APRM).
