Podcasts: tralac Annual Conference 2011
Posted on Wednesday, September 21st, 2011 by tralac in Audio, Eventstralac’s Annual Conference took place in Cape Town, South Africa on 8-9 September 2011. The keynote presentation was by Patrick Low, Chief Economist at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The WTO’s 2011 World Trade Report focuses on the WTO and preferential trade agreements (PTAs). Patrick provided an overview of key trends in PTAs; the reasons why countries enter into these agreements, the relationship between PTAs and the multilateral trading system, as well as the scope of modern PTAs. A key finding of the report, is that PTAs are increasingly going beyond tariff liberalization; including many non-tariff issues, specifically regulatory issues. In short the inclusion of behind-the-border issues in many PTAs reflects important developments in the architecture of global production networks and the pursuit of efficiencies in production, distribution and trade.
