The European Union has concluded a long-term bilateral agreement on trade and development aid. The aim of the agreement is to provide an appropriate framework for dialogue between the parties, to support the efforts made by South Africa to strengthen the economic and social foundations of its transition process, to promote regional cooperation and economic integration in southern Africa in order to contribute to its economic and social development, to encourage the development and liberalisation of trade in goods, services and capital between the parties, to encourage the integration of South Africa in the world economy and to promote cooperation between the Community and South Africa.
